Independent Psychiatric Evaluation

An Independent Medical Evaluation, often called an IME, is a neutral psychiatric assessment performed to evaluate an individual’s mental health condition, symptoms, treatment history, functional status, and case-related questions. IMEs are commonly requested by insurers, employers, attorneys, agencies, or other third parties that need an independent professional opinion.

When Is an IME Used?

What the Evaluation Includes

The Independent Medical Evaluation may include the following components, depending on the referral question and available records:

• A clinical interview focused on symptoms, psychiatric history, treatment history, work or functional status, and case-specific questions.
• A mental status examination documenting cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and functional observations at the time of evaluation.
• Review of medications, prior diagnoses, therapy history, hospitalizations, substance use history, and relevant medical conditions.
• Use of rating scales, psychological testing, or additional documentation review when clinically or administratively appropriate.
• A written report summarizing findings, diagnostic impressions when applicable, and professional opinions related to the referral questions.

Report and Confidentiality

The IME report is prepared for the requesting party as part of the evaluation engagement. Because the evaluation is performed for an independent purpose rather than treatment, the usual confidentiality rules of a clinical doctor-patient relationship do not apply in the same way. The limits of confidentiality and the purpose of the evaluation are reviewed before the evaluation begins.
