Independent Medical Evaluation
An Independent Medical Evaluation (IME) is a neutral, objective assessment performed to evaluate an individual’s psychiatric condition and functional status in the context of a legal, insurance, or occupational matter. IMEs are conducted to provide an independent professional opinion for third parties such as insurers, employers, or legal counsel.

We do not accept any form of Insurance, federal (Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare) or commercial.

Who Conducts It?

Qualified Mental Health Professionals

IMEs are typically performed by a psychiatrist (a medical doctor with specialty training in mental health) or by a psychologist with forensic evaluation experience. The evaluator has expertise in objective assessment and documentation for medico-legal purposes.

Important: An IME does not create a doctor–patient relationship between the evaluator and the examinee. The evaluation is conducted for an independent third-party purpose and confidentiality is managed accordingly.

When Is an IME Used?

IMEs are commonly requested by insurance companies, employers, or legal teams to assess the validity, severity, or functional impact of mental health-related claims. Typical contexts include disability determinations, workers’ compensation, personal injury litigation, and fitness-for-duty evaluations.

Key Aspects of the Evaluation

The Independent Medical Evaluation generally includes the following components:

  • Comprehensive review of relevant medical, psychiatric, and other records supplied by treating providers, employers, or requestors.
  • A clinical interview conducted in-person or via secure video, focused on symptoms, history, functioning, and relevant occupational or legal questions.
  • Formal mental status examination (MSE) documenting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral findings at the time of the evaluation.
  • Use of validated psychological testing or rating scales when indicated to clarify diagnostic or functional issues.
  • An independent, evidence-based written report that summarizes findings, provides diagnostic impressions (if applicable), and offers professional opinions regarding diagnosis, causation, prognosis, and functional limitations.

Report & Confidentiality

The IME report is prepared for the requesting party and is shared with that party as part of the engagement. Because the evaluation is performed for a third-party purpose, the usual patient–provider confidentiality rules differ from a standard therapeutic relationship; specific limits of confidentiality will be explained prior to the evaluation.

Scheduling & Fees

IME scheduling, required documentation, and fees vary depending on scope and requestor requirements. Please contact our office to discuss availability, required records, and an estimated fee for the requested evaluation.
